About Me

JudyBandsmer_PaintbrushPhotography-2I am a prize-winning photographer who has the privilege of doing what I love — photographing the beauty of people. My images have appeared in both Canadian and International lifestyle, fashion, and art magazines, as well as other publications. Currently, I live in Victoria, BC, Canada, an incredible place to bring together my love of the outdoors and “people” photography.

I love the concept of change and transience: “It is precisely because it withers away that life shines so brightly.” Capturing moments of life as it is right now, and turning it into art, is something very meaningful to me. And I passionately believe that everyone and everything is beautiful – I love finding that beauty and bringing it out for everyone else to see too.

I have a special fondness for helping others see beauty in themselves, especially for women, many of whom struggle with seeing themselves as being beautiful. Here is what some subjects have said:

  • Thank you! I never ever ever ever feel good about how I look in pictures, let alone real life, so this is great for me!”
  • You have helped me overcome a phobia, and I’m really grateful. It’s also nice to have the memento for when I’m older, there are barely any other pictures of me anywhere!”
  • I love almost all of them… that’s pretty ironic because I am the least photogenic person usually.”

I also love capturing a subject’s personality. The honest expression of self is a fun challenge to capture and portray. Here are some more things subjects or their friends/families have said:

  • That is so beautiful! I can hear her laugh! (And she looks like mamma!)”
  • These are just stunning, Judy. I’m not sure if I have a #1 favorite — so many of them capture our beautiful [name]‘s personality perfectly.”
  • [Your photos] express the model’s true self… Just gorgeous!”

Victoria Photographer Paintbrush Photography Judy Bandsmer I am also committed to bringing you high quality and artistic photos. Excellence is important. I am constantly upgrading my skills and equipment,  and I participate in local, provincial and national photography workshops and competitions. Currently I spend between 4 and 30 hours a week doing  self-directed learning in photography, art, and editing. This shows in my work:

  • Your work is beautiful, artistic, sometimes quirky (in a good way) and I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way.”
  • This could be a painting.”
  • I look like an album cover!”

Time slips by all too quickly, and change is a constant. I love photography because it helps celebrate and commemorate the transience of life: capturing life as it is right now, and turning it into art.
